A website that offers parents and children comprehensive and easy to understand information on children's health will receive $4.5 million over three years, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced Friday.

AboutKidsHealth.ca is a website and resource centre created and run by Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. The site includes animations and illustrations in the kids' section exploring how the human body works, as well as health and safety information such as tips to avoid sunburn.

"Not only will AboutKidsHealth.ca survive, it will expand to serve even more Canadians," Aglukkaq said at a news conference at the hospital.

There is also children's health information geared towards parents and health-care professionals, including research news and information on conditions.

The hospital said the funding will help the website:

  • Build a national network of partners to add knowledge and expertise.
  • Better serve rural, northern and aboriginal Canadians.
  • Move to full financial self-sufficiency.
The site launched in 2004 and receives more than 140,000 visitors in an average month, its director, Dr. Ross Hetherington, said in a news release.

AboutKidsHealth will be available in English, French and Chinese in the summer. Plans are also underway to make key sections available in Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, Tamil, Portuguese and Punjabi, through funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
