Be attentive to signs of suicidal depression in the summer
Anchor Magazine
By Barton Goldsmith, www.VenturaCountyStar.com

It is a myth that most suicides occur during the winter holidays. According to scientific research by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Suicide Prevention Center, most suicides occur during late July and August.

This is important information, even if we don’t know why depressed people are more prone to taking their own lives at this time of year. The fact is we may be less observant and miss the warning signs during the summer months.

It is also alarming to note that calls to suicide hotlines have increased by 70 percent since the recession began.

If you or a loved one suffer from depression, substance abuse, or suicidal thoughts that have persisted for two weeks or more, and are not under the care of a medical doctor and therapist, it’s time for a checkup.

For more information, go online to National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - With Help Comes Hope or call 800-273-TALK or 800-SUICIDE
