Most North Americans will be able to get an extra hour of sleep this weekend thanks to the annual shift back to standard time.

Officially, the change occurs at 2 a.m. Sunday, but most people will set their clocks back before hitting the sack Saturday night.

Remember, it's fall back an hour. Otherwise, you'll be an hour early on Sunday for church, golf, brunch or whatever.

Clocks fall back at 2 a.m. on Sunday except in most of Saskatchewan as well as parts of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.

Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Public safety officials say this is also a good time to put a new battery in the smoke alarm, no matter where you live.

When you change your clocks in the fall and spring, it?s also a good time to change smoke detector batteries and check to make sure device are in working order, says the fire department.

Around the world, about 75 countries and territories have at least one location that observes Daylight Saving Time, according to TimeandDate.com. On the other hand, 164 don't observe the time change at all.

Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. local time the second Sunday in March.
