Kids' Benadryl allergy pills recalled

Children's Benadryl allergy tablets are being recalled at the wholesale and retail level in Canada.

The recall applies to all lots of Children's Benadryl Allergy Meltaways tablets. The medicines still work and consumers can still use them, Johnson & Johnson said in a statement Wednesday.

"The recall was initiated after a review revealed insufficiencies in the development of the manufacturing process," the New Brunswick, N.J.-based company said in consultation with Health Canada.

"There is no indication that the recalled products do not meet quality standards, and this recall is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events."

The company offered no further explanation of the shortcomings in the manufacturing process. The Benadryl tablets were distributed in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Belize, Barbados, St. Martin and St. Thomas, Bloomberg News reported, citing the company.
Health Canada said the recall of the marketed lots was a precautionary measure, since the company has identified quality control concerns only on lots that had not been released for sale.

The products carry the DIN 02061287 as well as these codes:
  • UPC (EA): 060245294657
  • UPC (CS): 10060245294654
  • LOT #s: AFC080, ALC111
Consumers with questions should call the company's consumer care centre at 1-888-222-6036 from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

Health Canada said it will continue to monitor the safety of health products on the Canadian market, including those manufactured at McNeil Consumer Healthcare plants, and will inform Canadians if new safety information arises.
