CBC Passionate Eye Documentary on Using Comedy to Fight Mental Illness and Stigma

Cracking Up is a life-affirming documentary about people with mental illness who embark on a quirky quest to become stand up comics. The film follows 11 courageous people who suffer from mental illness as they pursue a year of stand up comedy. Part fun and part therapy, the course, entitled Stand Up For Mental Health is the brainchild of Vancouver counselor, stand-up comic, and author of The Happy Neurotic: How Fear and Angst Can Lead To Happiness and Success, David Granirer. "It's like 'The Full Monty' except people want us to keep our clothes on", he says.

Doing stand-up comedy has had an amazing effect on the people in the course. For the first time in their lives, they have embraced the word crazy, and learned to laugh at their mental illness - and their audiences are laughing right along with them. They have discovered a talent they never dreamt they had.

Airs nationally on August 30 at 9 p.m. on CBC's Doc Zone.

The comedy is pretty good. One of the more popular videos at their YouTube channel:

I've been thinking of taking an improv class for a while now to get better at being social and spontaneous, and not take myself so seriously. Thanks for posting!

Glad to hear that the medication is working for you! Good luck with the beginning of therapy on Monday. "It has always seemed like our dysfunctions kind of feed off each other. It's like we're addicted to one another and can't seem to escape each other." I wonder if this relationship will resolve itself as you work through therapy and continue on with your treatment plan. Make sure you work on yourself first.

aww hun thats sad to hear you have to go through that and i thought i was going through HELL, i guess not. Don't let nobody get to you at alll! stay strong even if your broken down inside, have pride for yourself. Like everybody said find any way out your house as POSSIBLE! they said they don't care if you're home or not so that'll be no problem. It's better to stay away from negetive places and trust me thats a negetive place, now that you are grown and have the advantage to leave take it...
