HI all

I am a life coach practicing worldwide through skype/email or face to face in NZ.

What I am interested in, if people are willing to share, is what people need or want from a life coach. In other words, what products or services could a life coach offer that you would find helpful. This is really a bit of market research and maybe not the right forum for it, but I would rather structure my services according to the needs of people than according to what I think they need. So what would be most helpful?

I am hoping people will respond with ideas - I am not trying to use this to advertise - rather just looking for a place where people are likely to give me some feedback.

Thank you
Sharon

Sharon,

For those unfamiliar with the services provided by a life coach, would you elaborate on what services might or could be available.

What are the qualifications, training and credentials of life coaches, and are there governing bodies that oversee their work in various jurisdictions?

When and why would someone seek the services of a life coach?

By better understanding what it is you do, might help in providing you with the feedback you're looking for.

Hi Steve

There are different qualifications available for life coaches. In my case I have a degree in Psychology with specialisation in psychological counselling as well as a diploma in life coaching and continually add to my qualifications. There are professional bodies - I subscribe to the IAPLC but there are a few. Its not as controlled as counselling or psychology is, therefore if you seek a lifecoach, it is good to check that they actually have qualifications or are registered somewhere. As an extra (not required but good for us anyway) I also subscribe to supervision, meaning I see my own counsellor for an hour after every 10 hours of coaching that I do.

Life coaching appears to have different purposes for different people but mostly it seems that people seek out the services of a life coach when they are undergoing periods of change/transition and need help either adjusting to it or setting goals or actually achieving things that need to be done. So at any period of life where a person is trying to decide a way forward, life coaching is very helpful. Its also helpful for other things, though. Most of us just do life without giving it a whole lot of thought and hope we achieve our dreams, goals, aspirations. Life coaching can help one live more deliberately and stay on track better. It gives you an objective sounding board, someone to keep you on task, someone to support you and offer objective criticism or ask questions, etc. So it can have alot of uses. I find that it often works really well alongside other therapies, can work well just on its own and is therefore very versatile. My hope is also to run support groups and offer workshops to provide a more cost effective means of helping others in time.

I hope that answers your question somewhat.

Regards
Sharon

I am not sure if this is the type of feedback you are looking for, but something I think would be hugely helpful for many people would be a) ideas or techniques for motivating the self into action - actually getting up and doing a thing - and b) ideas and techniques for how to make a big decision - how to actually know or decide WHAT to do.

transitional stages say one from working to being retired

from having family to not having one from leaving a home of over 14 yrs to a different area smaller place

from being someone who people look up to in work situation to being no one life changes dealing with it all

HI there Forgetmenot

Yeah - those kinds of life changes. I have also had clients come to me when they have some or other crisis in their lives that is getting the better of them and they need some help working through it. I work slightly differently to a counsellor in that instance but its not completely unlike counselling.
