Animal Hoarding has been related to obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Hoarding is a serious human and animal welfare problem that affects every community in the country. It?s only when the hoarding degenerates into criminal animal abuse that authorities can get involved. Before then, it festers, with helpless pets locked away inside the homes of people who are often suffering from serious emotional problems.
Animal Planet works along side Dr Karen Lynn Cassiday, clinical director of the Anxiety and Agoraphobia Treatment Center, to provide psychological care for those suffering the symptoms of Animal Hoarding. We provide our participants and their families with therapy long after our cameras have left the scene.
CONFESSIONS: ANIMAL HOARDING is an intimate portrayal of people and animals affected by hoarding and the challenges of confronting this unusual psychological condition. Each episode delves into the hearts and minds of individuals afflicted, and the family members and friends who want to help prevent their loved ones from spinning further out of control.
Confessions: Animal Hoarding is a new television series on Animal Planet that tries to find solutions to the problems of animal hoarding before it becomes criminal animal abuse. Animal Planet provides safe opportunities to explore the compulsive care-giving, digging deep into desire for love and paralyzing fears of loss to understand how the problem grew so extreme and to provide tools to put a healthy plan into action. The goal is to help improve the lives of everyone involved - human and animal. We work with families and friends to help hoarders who may want help with humane placement of pets, veterinary care, house cleaning, psychological help to prevent recidivism, and other support. We have been successful in helping animals that are being ignored and helping the hoarder and their families? tackle the emotional issue that fuel this behavior.
Most of these situations are not dealt with until they become criminal. This results in animals being euthanized by over-stressed shelters, and doesn?t address the underlying psychological issues - meaning nearly 100% of people end up in the same situation again.
We are dedicated to finding comprehensive long-term solutions and believe therapy to be key to this. We can bring in experts and have the resources to help both people and their pets.
If you or someone you know currently has more animals than they can properly care for and need help - whether they have a houseful of ferrets, rabbits, reptiles, birds or common household pets, please visit our website: Animal Hoarding Project
We will treat all submissions with confidentiality and respect.
