The Chaleur Autism and Asperger Family Centre in Bathurst was officially opened Wednesday.
The centre will focus on helping families get the help they need for their children who suffer from autism and asperger syndrome. It will also help the community understand the disorders.
Annette Hondas, vice-principal of Ecole Secondaire Nipisiguit, said many of her teachers have already benefitted from the centre.
"What we've done is, we've worked closely with the centre. All the teacher's aides at my school, we came and we visited. We were able to borrow some literature to help us become more aware," she said.
The centre hopes to increase awareness of Autism and Asperger Syndrome in the Chaleur region to make things easier for those with the disorder.
