Hello! ADHD diagnosis of about 10 years ago now.
I'm now approaching 29, and I've noticed some things about myself that I was wondering if there were any literature proving or disproving it.
I'm currently on Dexadrine, approx 15mg or x2 if needed. So it's important to know that a stimulant is involved here.
Anyways up until September the past 3 years I've been working like a slave. I mean, 70-80 hours per week, on the road. I would be working outside from 7am until I got back to my hotel/camp, where I'd do my paperwork and timesheets. I needed time to unwind, and would usually go to bed at around 1am, and forceably wake myself up for 5:30, in order to prepare for the day ahead. My energy for the first hour in the morning would be slightly low, but by 8 oclock, my brain would be at it's highest level of focus, and then wane as the day went on. (Making those evenings hard to get through)
Now spring forward to now that I took time off to go to school, but then didn't (long story)...I'm finding my days of brain cooperation is less than ideal. It could be the changing months, it could be the lack of structured routine that work afforded me. (Even though I worked with one other person, and I dictated what we did). But I digress, during my times of 4.5 hours of sleep, my body wanted to sleep longer. Yet, now that I've had a month off, if I do sleep for even 7 hours, the inability to concentrate and focus on anything that needs to be completed is becoming a problem.
I'm a victim to my distractions, as us ADHD people are. Which has led me to this revelation, that I'd like to know if it's been researched more. Last night I was playing a videogame, and 6am rolled around. The hyper focus was not typical- nor is it controlled. I wasn't going to allow myself to be a ridiculous night person like I had in the past, but I was tired enough that I needed to sleep. So I went to sleep for 3.5 hours.
I forced myself up, and like in the past, (typical sleep while working) I was more clear minded than I have been in weeks! As the day lingers, there isn't a feeling of needing to catch up on sleep, and my constant restlessness afforded by my ADHD is also diminished (even while medicated). I also recieve a similar affect while I'm sick. Except I haven't been sick since 2007..minus a few migranes every few years. It should also be noted, that I haven't even touched the addicting video game that grabbed me last night, today.
Anyone else have experience with this? Should I consider modifying my sleep schedules to be much less, in order to bring more balance? What can I do to experiment; what things should I look out for to see if it's beneficial, or more harmful to my health?
Thanks!
