Canadians are the heaviest Internet users in the world, spending an average 45.3 hours online each month.

A report by ComScore released Thursday showed Canadians aged 15 and over relied on the Internet far more than users elsewhere. The United States had the second heaviest usage, with 38.6 hours per person.

?Canada continues to lead the world in online engagement,? the report stated. ?Movie retail, online trading and coupon sites represent the fastest growing categories in terms of unique visitors.?

Canadians visited an average of 98.5 sites a month in the fourth quarter, which was also the largest number of any country measured.

What sites they visited depended largely on their household incomes ? those with more than $60,000 a year preferred political, education, online trading, books and business news sites. Households with an annual income below $60,000 a year preferred sites focused on dating, travel, gambling, radio and cars.

The report also found social networks expanding rapidly, although it said Facebook ?is nearing a point of visitor saturation? in Canada. Still, it remains the preferred destination.

?Other social networks? visitor bases are posting strong growth, including Twitter, LinkedIn and Tumblr,? it reported. ?Engagement on many social sites is trending upward, with Facebook driving the large majority of the increase in total minutes and page views for the overall category.?

Canadian men spend an average of 6.5 hours a month on social network sites, a gain of 39 per cent in the last year. Women are far heavier users, with an average monthly usage of 8.8 hours for a gain of 33 per cent from last year.

Both sexes are also spending more time watching videos, with usage up 58 per cent in the last year. Half of all videos viewed in Canada originate from YouTube. Those under 35 years old are the heaviest users, and prefer to watch entertainment videos ? in the fourth quarter, more than 5 million entertainment videos were streamed in Canada.

News was the next busiest category, with 259,000 videos played.

The report didn?t include pornography sites.
