My daughter is very thirsty drinking water plus plus. I took her shopping today and she started to feel ill again. Needed water. I think she is showing signs of diabetes like my brother. His doctor stated it was his psychiatric medication that was causing his diabetes. I think i will take her in to walk in clinic to have her blood tested then i guess if it is diabetes we will need to adjust her psychiatric meds. Why do some develop diabetes like my brother and others like my twin do not. mary

Re: diabetic symptoms

Mary,

To gain some insights into diabetes, please have a look at the Mayo Clinic HERE

You are correct in having your daughter's blood and urine chemistry analyzed, and as you correctly stated some psychotropic medications do have an effect on people with diabetes.

The following warning is issued on the U.S. site for Abilify:

If you have diabetes, or risk factors for diabetes (for example, obesity, family history of diabetes), or unexpected increases in thirst, urination, or hunger, your blood sugar should be monitored. Increases in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), in some cases serious and associated with coma or death, have been reported in patients taking ABILIFY and medicines like it

Perhaps others can offer better insights, but i would expect that genetics, predisposition, risk factors, lifestyle and body chemistry would be some of the factors.

Re: Atypical Antipsychotic Medications & Diabetes

Thanks for information. I think with my daughter is that her quick increase in weight has added to the problems of this diabetic symptoms. I am encouraging her to come to clinic with me to get blood test but right now she is not wanting to go. I will definitely watch her and hopefully get her to come with me later thanks mary

Re: diabetic symptoms

Mary,

If there is the slightest concern about a diabetic condition, I would urge you to strenuously persuade your daughter to be evaluated.

The complications from avoiding treatment are serious and life threatening, and should not be taken lightly.

The symptoms may not be as persuasive as having angina, but the consequences are just as serious.

Get her to a doctor!

Re: diabetic symptoms

I hear your concern they are mine too i am continuing my insistence she goes to walk in clinic with me to get her blood tested. This is the problem when you don't have a regular doctor. I am hoping to get her a GP next week to take her on because being on all these medication she needs follow up care something psychiatrist don't seen to do that often. i keep you updated if i can get her to listen to me ill let you know mary

Re: Diabetic symptoms

Mary, I developed diabetes myself and my doctors do think that at least in part it is due to the medications I take. I do experience extreme thirst when my sugar is too high, and shakiness when it is too low. I take Gluctrol to control the symptoms and am on a diabetic diet for the most part. It does not run in my family so I'm not sure if that has any bearing on whether the medications play a bigger role. In any case, I agree with everyone here that she should be tested.

Take care,

Re: Diabetic symptoms

Well i did get my daughter to go to walk in clinic with me where the doctor just ordered a fasting blood sugar to be done tommorrow am. So that is one step accomplished. I really hope this is not the case but i am not blind to the fact she is showing signs of diabetes. Same thing happened to my older brother I just feel get over one step and yet another is thrown at us. Just have to deal with this when we get results. I have made appointment as well for my daughter to apply for a GP. on April 28 whom i hear is very good. I hope he takes her on because she needs someone following not only her medical care but her psychological care as well. This would take stress off me as yes i am in the medical field but taking care of your own is so much difficult i am to attached to emotional. Just have to say one step time feeling overwhelmed again thats all. Mother just called crying needing my help sister called wanting to come home says she is on april 28 and now this. Just pray she does not have this something else for me to look after. sorry just anxious thats all. I will deal with this when results come in after blood taken tommorrow. bye mary

Re: Diabetic symptoms

More blood work results to come but it turned out my daughters thyroid is being affected. Hypothyroid working to slow They have repeated test for blood sugar will find results later. I am glad i took her in to doctors as i knew something was off. Is it the psychiatric medicatiion causing her thyroid to be affected as well.

Re: Diabetic symptoms

Just talked with daughters psychiatrist and let him know of her thryroid test being low. He said that could be part of her depression problem. Lets hope they are able to help her thyroid function better still waiting on more test mary
