Direct X 9 Mode?

I recently updated Google Earth which deposited a shortcut offering to now run Google Earth in Direct X 9 mode. When the selection is made, the next step would make that mode the default.

What is the benefit, risk (advantage or disadvantage) of running Google Earth in Direct X 9 mode?

As I understand it, this gives you enhanced graphics, sort of like HD video vs. regular video, assuming your hardware and operating system supports that mode.

Interesting article, in particular that Direct X is in a later version than the Version 9 Google Earth wants to use.

I'll run the smoke test later to see what it does.
