E. coli walnut recall expanded to B.C.
CBC News
Apr 9, 2011
A Canadian nut distribution company has issued a recall for walnuts sold in at least two Vancouver grocery stores due to possible E. coli contamination.
On Friday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency expanded the recall notice posted to its web site to include some walnut products sold at Kim's Mart in the 500-block of West Broadway and Triple A Market, also known as New Triple A, at 1623 Commercial Drive.
The recalled products are raw walnuts and walnut pieces, in 500- to 600-gram packages, with UPC codes beginning with 0 200718, or sold as bulk in one-pound or less quantities in clear plastic bags with yellow tape closures.
Earlier this week, the CFIA told consumers to avoid eating all bulk and pre-packaged raw, shelled walnuts from Amira Enterprises, a fruit and nut distribution company based in Montreal. The affected raw, shelled walnuts were originally imported from the U.S.
Since January, one person in Quebec has died and 13 other Canadians have fallen sick with an E. coli bacterial infection with the same genetic fingerprint. Federal health officials believe many of them ate walnuts before they got sick, but have not been able to confirm the bacteria came from walnuts from Amira or any other company tested.
On Thursday, Mark Raizenne, director general of the Public Health Agency of Canada's Centre for Food-borne, Environmental and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases in Ottawa, said of the 14 reported cases of E. coli infection, nine people consumed walnuts and seven ate walnuts from the same distributor.
On Friday, some of the recalled products were still shelved for sale in some Montreal businesses.
In March, an E. coli outbreak prompted a recall of hazelnuts sold in Western Canada. The nuts were also imported from the U.S.
