Health Canada says it has identified microbial contamination in samples of a product sold by the company Mary Ginseng House.

The company is recalling its 100 per cent Pure High Calibre Pow Sum Ontario Ginseng, after Health Canada said it could pose a risk to people with compromised immune systems.

The federal agency tested the product after a consumer complaint, and found the presence of bacteria, including Klebsiella oxytoca, Pantoea sp. and Enterobacter cloacae. Health Canada says these bacteria do not pose a significant risk to healthy Canadians whose bodies can successfully fight off an infection. But those with weakened immune systems could end up with a serious infection of the lower intestine causing cramps and watery, bloody diarrhea.

The bacteria could also cause lung infections, urinary tract infections or, if introduced into a wound, infections of the skin, soft tissues, organs, or blood poisoning.

Customers are advised to speak with their health-care provider if they have any questions or concerns about using the natural health products.

Adverse reactions should be reported to Health Canada.

The product affected comes in containers of 100 capsules, 500 mg, Lot L 805 (NPN 80019262).
