Hello,
I'm new, obviously. I found here looking for a support community. I hope everything works out. I've been through a lot in my life. I'm only 19 too. I'm severly depressed and I believe I have ptsd. I don't know for sure though. I'm terrified of psychiatrists so I never wanted to go talk to one. My realationship is really suffering though and so is my school work so I figured I should just be brave and do it. It took me 8 weeks but today I called a therapist and have an appointment for next week. I know I'm rambeling but I don't really know what to say.
Thank

It's the little things that leak out during rambling that give us an insight. Ramble on:) Tell us why you are lonely tonight.

Welcome! I'm glad you had the courage to post. Wow you made a therapy appointment. That was a big step toward helping yourself get some relief. Good for you!

Thanks. I really hope it actually helps though. The last three I went to just made things worse. I'm really scared actually.

Yeah. I mean I only know what I've read and was taught in a few classes but it fits. This therapist is one through my university. I really don't know what I expect to be honest.

Hi Ghost,
After your first chat you will wonder why you put it off. It is just chatting and it pretty much always feels good afterwards. Like you got some poison out of you. You'll feel better and lighter. And bit by bit you will find yourself feeling happier. I wish you all the best, and welcome.

Hi Peter,
I'm just really not sure. I want to believe that but the other 3 I went to really did make things worse. I just don't trust them.

It is good you got therapist at you university good for you perhaps they can also give you connections to psychologist or pdoc who can give you a proper diagnosis if thats what you want. You regular doctor can also prescribe you medication for depression as well. No need to fear therapist appt okay it is a good thing to get some help now so you don't get worse hugs.

Would you elaborate on why you are apprehensive about speaking to a psychiatrist?

I will say that my sister met a couple that she wasn't comfortable with in terms of their manner but after a couple of tries she hit one she felt compatible with. As Steve mentioned can you give an idea what did not suit you?

I was 5 when I saw the first one, it was right after my dad died. And she just made me really mad. I didn't understand what she was talking about and she always told me I was mad at him and hated him, which now i know i do, but i didn't then. The second one had my mom go to the appointments with me and mostly just talked to her about me with me just sitting there getting ignored. and the third one was openly judgmental. Not the best experiences.

You are older now you can do the talking and get clarification of what does not seem right. You will be in charge now okay so try a new pdoc make sure you are comfortable with him or her Not all are bad but i know there are some that are very cold but there are some with hearts that really care I hope you find one like that hugs

Exactly!

As an adult now, you are the consumer and the psychiatrist is the service provider. If you are not comfortable with that physician's manner or competence, you have the choice to either vocalize your concerns or find another doctor. There is no "one size fits all" doctor/patient match, so if you cannot feel comfortable with the person you are consulting, as an empowered adult consumer of medical services, you can take charge and investigate choices.

When you have a comfortable relationship with your therapist, you become a partner in your healthcare, so it's your responsibilty to make known any concerns you might have.
