I've tried to see several counselors over the past 2 years but all of them just required me to explain the same thing over and over again. I was very frustrated and left with a greater stress than I did before. My English is poor as it is not my native tongue and I can't speak without an accent. In writing, people do say that I can communicate passably. However speaking is a different story. I have been mocked before, not to my face, but by others, between themselves. I can hear them conversing regarding my accent and attempting to imitate my accent :hissyfit:.

I have also been told that wherever I go, I look like I don't want to be there. One of my friends said I look out of place no matter where I go. I also feel odd talking to other people who I don't know well, as I've have bad comments regarding my speech. I suppose I just need a way to let this out and feel better about it. I hope there is a way to see someone that will actually help me instead of being so rude and just pushing me away.

I agree with Dr Baxter. What an interesting name you picked :D

Your writing in English seems quite good to me!

welcome :tiphat:

what are the difficulties with your speech? is it purely the accent? or do people have trouble understanding the actual words you are speaking?

 Thank you very much for the welcomes. I'm happy that I found this forum :)

The username: at the time I signed up, that was on my mind... I'm fine now however ;) I guess that was sort of a juvenile name, in hindsight...oh well.

Thanks for saying my writing in English is good. I have been told that I seem like a native English speaker when I write, which is how I can do schooling. I just can't communicate properly at times. Yes it is just the accent, not the actual words. I suppose my sentence structure and such is alright, as I am fine in writing, so it would seem odd if it were anything beyond the accent.

Jazzey -- French is such a beautiful language, and I hope to learn it some day. if I had grow up here in Ontario I would have learned it in school as well, but I still admire the language and the flow of how it is spoken.

Your grammar, spelling, syntax, command of the local vernacular, and choices of superlatives are above average for most communications. Your articulation is clear and precise. It seems as though English is your first language. What language is your mother tongue? You most certainly qualify as 'passable' in your English.

My mothertongue is Tamil, I have lived in Ontario for about 5 years now so it is great to hear I write as if English is my first language :jiggy:

I am impressed. I have many friends from Sri Lanka, that have been here for many many years; but although their spoken English is discernable, their written English is difficult at times to understand, mostly from a grammatical viewpoint.

To have my accent made fun of is of no consequence. It does not define a person. That one undertakes a second language is commendable, and those who laugh, well, let them laugh. It probably does sound stereotypically funny to some. Can't make 'em stop can we.....

Yes, I do let them laugh...it is not like I can do anything to stop them! It's their problem if they can't tolerate someone who speaks differently.

Hello again VFB.

There was a nice fellow at my work who came from China. We would never teased him, because we were for sure not like that. He had been here in Canada for about 10 years. What I would ask of him, if I had a difficult time understanding him, is that he speak slower. Which I found helpful to understand him better. He was always fine with me, cause I was always kind about it. Often times, he would come quietly to me to ask how to pronounce words too and I would definately help him.

He was taking English classes to help him pronounce his words a bit better.

I even have to do this with folks who's mother tongue is French. Here in Southern Ontario they teach it in school, but the accent is all different as well.

Funny enough, my family's native accent I can't understand well either  my mom's family is from Glascow Scotland and often times when we are all at a family reunion I have a difficult time too with the accent.

I am sorry to hear that people are mean to you about it. That sure isn't nice.

You seem so kind :support:

Thank you, and you seem very kind and respectful of others yourself. That is very considerate of you to help the man at your work with speaking English. I'm sure that he appreciated your help, it definitely means a lot when people reach out to help those who are newer to the country.

I also suppose it would depend on what age you come, I came when I was 15. If you come in your 30s, it's never too late to learn a new language but it is more difficult. I know my parents still struggle moreso than I do.

You are right. The fellow from my work came here in his late 20's.
