Kate McGarrigle, Musician and Mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Dead at 63

Revered Canadian folk singer and songwriter as well as matriarch of an acclaimed musical family, Kate McGarrigle, has passed away at age 63 after suffering from clear cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. The sisters Kate and Anna McGarrigle recorded their first album together in 1975 and they have recorded and performed together since. They are among the most critically acclaimed of North American folk musicians.
Kate McGarrigle was married to singer songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. The relationship ended in divorce. Among their children are successful singers Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright. In 1993 Kate McGarrigle was made a Member of the Order of Canada along with her sister. It is one of Canada's highest honors. The McGarrigles official web site says:
"Sadly our sweet Kate had to leave us last night. She departed in a haze of song and love surrounded by family and good friends. She is irreplaceable and we are broken-hearted. Til we meet again dear sister."
