Hello,

I have TS since I was 11 yo also OCD and insomia. I am in my late 30's and I am on a "drug free holiday" no TS meds. The TS is 1000 times worse. The vocal tics are worse.

The OCD (germs), my mum always saids I am bossie, because I remind to wripe things down if she has not washed her hands.:mad:

I have tried all the meds and nothing is helping. The last drug I tried, it is also used for Parkinsons, very expensive, did not help.

I would appreciate any help and advice, on TS meds and with my mum who does not inderstand the OCD.
Thank you

Hello, Ireland...

First, I am wondering about the rationale for the "drug free holiday", especially since you state that "The TS is 1000 times worse" and "The vocal tics are worse". Was this the recommendation of your doctor?

Second, you say, "I have tried all the meds and nothing is helping"... what medications are you talking about here? medications for Tourette Syndrome? or for OCD? Which ones specifically have you tried?

Ireland,

Has your Mother ever accompanied you when you see your physician who might be able to further explain your disorders?

Are you currently living with your Mum?

Hello,
Yes Dr recommend a drug free holiday. I have been off meds for about 2 years. I started meds at age 11yo. The meds I were on were for TS only. I will try to name them, Halodal, Orap, Pimozise, Risparidal, this durg that very expensive that treat Parkinson, studies show that it does help in TS but did not for me. There may be more meds I was on for the TS, but that is all I remember. I was never on any meds for OCD.

Hi Ireland, :welcome: to Psychlinks!

I do not understand the idea of a "drug free holiday". I have been on medication for over 14 years and neither my GP or Psychiatrist has ever suggested this. With the exception of when changing medications, but this is different all together.

Infact, my personal opinion (and I am not a doctor, just a fellow patient) I think it sounds cruel to even suggest to a patient to do this.

No doctor would ever ask someone with diabedes to go without insulin for a "drug free holiday"

I suspect that Dr. Sandor wanted to evaluate Ireland's Tourette symptoms while withdrawing the medications that had been prescribed.

Ireland,

Is there a plan for Dr. Sandor to restart any of the medications to help control your Tourette?

What are Dr. Sandor's thoughts about treating the OCD, or has this been discussed?

Dr.S though it would good for me to see how the tics would be. Before the drug free holiday (dfh), the tics were a bit worse. My head would tic alot to the point were I headaches almost everyday, and I would feel my neck cracking. Before the dfh I could suppress the tics. About 3 months or so after the dfh the vocal tics (I rarley had before the dfh) are worse to the point where I have had laryngitis.
If I may ask, do you kick box? I saw a reference to kick boxing on the bottom of you message..
Thanks

Ireland,

Were the medications that were withdrawn by Dr. S originally prescribed by him, or by other physician(s)?

Hi Steve,
Dr.S prescribed all my meds and weaned me off all meds. No follow up, due to other medical conditions, then his receptionship never got back to me. I discussed the OCD with nothing was done.
I have chronic insomia about 6 months before the tics started. If I am correct I told Dr S about 6 to 8 months after the TS, that I could not sleep and it was getting worse. He prescribed Halsion, (I may have spelt it wrong), I was on that drug for almost 10 years. I also told Dr S about 20 min after taking the meds, it make me very hungry. He replied it is all in my head.
I also had 2 sleeps tests done. My family Dr at the time said the test shows that I have sleep apnea and I have to the equimpment. I mention this to Dr S he said that was incorrect.
We I saw the sleep dr before the second test I mentioned to him that I can feel myself stop breathing and then I wake up gasping for air. My mum came into my room to see if I was ok. Sometimes I was scared to fall asleep. When I mentioned this to the sleep Dr, it is almost like it swept my commects under rug.
I though I would mention this.
Thanks

Ireland,

We know how overcrowded our medical system is in Canada, and if the receptionist did not get back to you, it might be worth your while to follow up yourself for another appointment.

As you have been without medication for two years, and if you feel the tics and perhaps the OCD are affecting your ability to function, it would be in your best interest to try to make another appointment.

If you choose to see the doctor again, you might want to ask about addressing your OCD as well as the tics.

Whatever you decide, if you consult a physician, you want to be sure that doctor has experience in treating Tourette. That's where the TSFC or the local chapter For Info Click Here can help point you in the right direction.

about 20 min after taking the meds, it make me very hungry.

That's a very interesting reaction! Sometimes things happen that may not be directly related to the medication, but happen to occur at the time of taking the med. Are you still taking the Halcion for sleep?
