Ever wonder what happens in your brain during a migraine attack?

During a migraine attack, nerves in the brain release chemicals, causing blood vessels to expand (also known as vasodilation), which is believed to contribute to migraine pain.

Additional chemicals are produced that inflame nerves and surrounding blood vessels and can cause migraine pain.

Recent studies have shown that combining a non steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) specifically Naprosyn (naproxin) with a migraine specific triptan class of medication (Imitrex) that the combination is more effective than the triptan alone, more effective than the NSAID alone and more effective than placebo.

GlaxoSmithKline has recently introduced a combination medication in the U.S. called Treximet which combines these two compounds.

Although the study investigated these two specific compounds, it is likely that other triptans may have a similar effect when combined with naproxen.

Check with your doctor for more information and to see if this combination is right for you.

Will discuss this with doctor right now prescribed meds for migraine is naproxin and tramacet only when migraine is bad. I wonder if treximet would be better thanks will discuss with doctor mary

Mary,

The two medications are distinctly different and your doctor would be in the best position to advise which might be best suited for you.

This is a combination medication that contains tramadol and acetaminophen.

Tramadol belongs to a group of medications called opioid analgesics and acetaminophen belongs to a group of medications called analgesics. Acetomenophen is marketed under the brand name Tylenol as well as other local brands.

This combination medication is used to manage moderate to moderately severe pain in adults. It decreases pain by working on the central nervous system

The medication Treximet is a combination of a group of medications called triptans, which have been developed to specifically treat migraine by aborting the migraine by affecting the neurotransmitters thought to be responsible for migraine.

Added to this combination is the NSAID Naprosyn (naproxin) for inflammation.

Physicians have been prescribing Naprosyn along with their triptan of choice for a while, but GSK obtained approval to market the combination in one medication.

If an NSAID is to be used, Naprosyn is preferred to others such as ibuprophen (Advil, Motrin etc) because of its longer action in the body.

If your migraines are frequent and severe, ask your doctor is a triptan might be right for you.
