Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself in the face of bullying and intimidation. But most young men do not grow up knowing when to stand up or how to do it. If their parents don't know how or when then they learn it from peers and most of the time that is the wrong way.
I read once that the difference between assertive and aggressive is that when you are assertive you continue to respect the other person. When you are aggressive you attempt to put the other person in an inferior place physically or emotionally - or both.
