For four decades, Hilary Stanton thought she was fine. But she had big gaps in her memory, and then a breakdown. She sought help and discovered she had been suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality.

Hilary had been able to function for so long because her mind had protected her from traumatic memories by creating alternate personalities. What followed next was more than a decade of therapy - much of it captured on film, in which Hilary's alters appear and work through their issues with Hilary's psychologist, Cheryl Malmo. That footage, combined with interviews with Hilary, her therapist, her family (partner Debbie and daughter) make this a documentary that takes the viewer directly into Hilary's world and reveals the power of the human mind to protect the self.

When the Devil Knocks premiered to a sold out audience at the 2010 Vancouver International Film Festival, and was named one of the top Canadian films at the festival. The Globe and Mail called it "a fascinating account - without the Hollywood sensation." Hilary Stanton was there, proud of her part in making this disorder more widely understood.

Sadly, two weeks after Hilary Stanton shyly and proudly rose to accept her standing ovation at the Vancouver International Film Festival, she was tragically killed in a car accident in Mexico. When the Devil Knocks is her legacy.
