MONTREAL - Longtime mascot Youppi! will be celebrating his milestone 40th birthday at the Bell Centre during the game against the Colorado Avalanche on Jan. 12.

Youppi! won't officially ring in the big 4-0 until Apr. 13, but the team wanted to help fête the lovable orange furball during the regular season, splitting the difference between the dates of his two major league sports debuts to settle on Jan. 12 as the big day.

The lone mascot to ever represent two major pro sports teams, Youppi! made his MLB debut with the Montreal Expos on Apr. 14, 1979, against the Chicago Cubs. He spent the next two-and-a-half decades working the crowd at the Big O, before Nos Amours played their final game in October 2004.

After a two-year hiatus from the professional ranks, Youppi! was adopted by the Canadiens on Sept. 16, 2005, and worked his first NHL game on Oct. 18 that same fall.

Cupcakes and other surprises will be on the menu and fans will have a chance to meet rival MLB and NHL mascots at the Bell Centre during Youppi!'s birthday game.

Not only is Youppi! the only mascot to represent 2 major pro sports teams he also "notoriously" seems to be the only mascot to have ever been tossed out of a Major League Baseball game for bugging the LA Dodgers on top of their dugout and especially Tommy Lasorda (the Manager) who got the umpire to have him tossed from the game :D

8/23/89: After complaints from Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, third-base umpire Bob Davidson ejects Expos mascot Youppi! from the game

They may not have made the playoffs this year but that doesn't mean they didn't have aq season to be proud of:

The Canadiens have compiled the third largest season-to-season point improvement in franchise history.

Bergevin: 'I think our fans should be proud of our team'

With 94 points, Claude Julien's contingent boasts 23 more points in the standings than last year - and they could finish the current campaign with a 25-point increase if they down the Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre on Saturday.
Only the 1926-27 and 1943-44 editions of the Habs have staged bigger turnarounds, registering 35 and 33-point improvements, respectively.
