Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is defined as a distressing or impairing preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in appearance and studies have shown that between 0.7-1.1% of the population suffer from this at any one time. There has been plenty of research into the links between BDD and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder but less attention has been paid to the links between BDD and social phobia. A study of 178 people with BDD in the U.S. found that 39.3% of them had suffered from social phobia at some point with 34.3% having it currently. People with BDD and social phobia were significantly more likely to be unemployed, have suicidal thoughts and to suffer from poor social adjustment.
