Can mirroring be this effective?

I've seen this show before and noticed that in leading up to the final point where they are standing opposite each other - Derren says very specific things (subliminal messages, if I am right in calling them that) leading up to this that will push the person/people in to drawing something, choosing something etc... If you watch it once, you don't notice it, but if you watch it over and over again, you should be able to notice things that he repeats when talking to his volunteers i the build up. For example, if they need to choose a card and there are several cards with different shapes on them, he'll have a build up before in explaining exactly what they need to do and within this he will say very subtle things such as 'you can sit at the small square table or can stand, however you are more comfortable' and lots of these things to subtly lead them to choose the card with a square on it for example. My examples weren't so good (!), I can't remember an exact example, but I noticed it after watching it again. In the case of this one, I wonder if there was something he has said about lines or yellow or what was in the room with them also that may have brought the guy to the point of saying about the yellow lines etc.
