Canadian beef recall expands over E. coli fears

Belmont uncooked lean ground beef, sold in 1.6-kilogram packages, part of expanded recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling more beef from the plant in Ontario that led to two earlier recalls over possible E. coli contamination.

The CFIA is warning people not to eat Belmont uncooked lean ground beef, sold in 1.6 kilogram packages ? with four 400-gram servings inside ? with the best-before date of June 1, 2014, and the UPC code 0 60597 35235 7.

The product is available nationally at Loblaws stores, including Real Canadian Superstores and Extra Foods in B.C.

The agency also said there may be recalls of additional products or best-before dates as the food safety investigation at the facility continues.

The beef comes from the Belmont factory in Toronto that supplied frozen burgers to Superstore and Sobeys chains.

Several days ago, the CFIA issued a recall for certain Compliments brand Super 8 Beef Burger patties, then issued another recall for four-ounce President's Choice Thick and Juicy Burgers.

All three recalls are due to E. coli concerns.

There have not been any reported illnesses associated with the recall.

The CFIA said the meat may not look or smell spoiled, but could cause serious illness.

Symptoms of E. coli contamination include severe abdominal cramping and diarrhea and, more seriously, could cause seizures or strokes.

Nova Scotia?s Department of Health and Wellness said when cooking ground beef, remember to:


  • Cook all ground beef until a thermometer inserted into centre of the meat reads 71 C.
  • Keep raw meat separate from other foods in the kitchen.
  • Wash hands, cutting boards, utensils and counter tops with hot, soapy water if they touch raw meat.
