I'm aware this is a very big problem in the U.S. That is, a person's constant fear or tension associated with being judged by society according to one's material success. I do not suffer from this fear. I do see it manifested in the current generation and wonder how much is social media responsible for this affliction? More so, advertising and the corporations behind the ads can be down right wicked in their techniques to distinguish between the have's and have-not's. If you don't wear, drive, or consume their products you are considered "less than". Young people are trying to find their place in the world and set out on their journey through life which is how it should be and its not like the hierarchy of status is anything new. It does become a concern when there is a sharp inequality in society where confidence, feelings, and self-worth are compromised and inevitably, mental health deteriorates. It seems so far from reality that many people can be okay with themselves just as they are. I have two boys in their 20's and see that they are not caught up in the status cycle. It's one less worry I have for them.:)

I see more teens caught up in this than young adults or adults - most people seem to grow out of it when they are able to see the real cost - but I do agree it is a sad phenomenon.
