Fred the dog has been reunited with the Montreal family of his deceased owner following a five-day journey across Canada.

The dog, which was found with deceased owner Cyril Roy in a Nanaimo, B.C., trailer three days after he had succumbed to heart failure, arrived by train at Montreal's Central Station Tuesday night.

"Fred is the final link to our healing process ? because our loss has been so hard," Roy's sister Karen said.

Roy's sisters had been trying to get Fred back to Montreal, since he was all that they had left to remember their brother.

But the family was unable to have Fred shipped to Montreal by plane because of his large size and the cold temperatures.

However, Beaconsfield, Que., resident Frank Palumbo volunteered to pay for airfare for his wife, M?lanie Pellerin, and her friend, Christianne Hendershot, to fly to B.C. and accompany Fred back by train.

VIA supplied the return train tickets for free.

Pellerin said she will miss her travelling companion.

"He's just like a big teddy bear, and he has this special walk and he's always, always happy," she said.

Cyril Roy saved the seven-year-old kugsha malamute from a pound when he was just a puppy, and the two had been inseparable.
