"The Gmail Notifier is an application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser."

"Please note that the Gmail Notifier isn't compatible with the Google Toolbar." [Apparently, it's compatible as long as one does not sign in to the to Google Toolbar.]

Don't you find it odd that it's not compatible with the toolbar?

I just have my Gmail accounts checked via my email client.... like any other email account. I believe that Windows Live now sets that up for you as well.

Yeah, and Windows Live makes it easy to include a GMail account.

However....

What I like about it the GMail notifier that it shows the "subjects, senders and snippets" of the message in the bottom right of the screen, as shown here.

Yes.

That's why they are promoting Google Talk, which includes that feature while offering compatibility with the Google Toolbar.

I remember that. I installed a gmail notifier eons ago when I got my first Gmail account but then when I realized I could retrieve the emails via Outlook Express I uninstalled it. :)

That is kind of cool, but I too used to have my Gmail download to my Outlook, which made life easier.

Now, my "regular" email forwards to my Gmail, and then Gmail forwards to my blackberry. I found this necessary because I was getting so many emails that my spam filter would block, that were good, but Gmail let through because it is smarter and actually more reliable.

Email used to be easy...way back in the day...
