After recently acquiring an Android tablet, I realized the audio out jack was combined with the microphone in jack, using one jack for both mic and earphones. If I wanted to use separate headphones and mic, or just headphone alone, or as in my case wanted to send music from the tablet to my stereo amplifier at home, ir could not be done without an adapter.
It seems smartphones use this kind of unified jack, so a company called Headset Buddy has all manner and combination of headset adapters: PC, RJ9, USB, Smartphone, 2.5mm to 3.5mm etc.
If you find yourself stuck for adapting audio from your device to something else you already have, you may want to see if this place has what you need.
