48 Public Forums on the Progress, Challenges and Promise of Mental Health Research

For nearly 20 years, NARSAD has organized public forums in communities around the country, at which experts on mental health disorders share some of the latest developments in research. For people coping with mental illness, their loved ones and mental health professionals, these events provide up-to-the-moment information on what we know about the symptoms and course of mental disorders and about available and potential treatments.

Now, in a major new initiative to reach more people who are concerned about the toll that mental illness is taking on our families and communities, NARSAD has organized a day of 48 free public forums across the United States and in Canada on Sunday, Sept. 14.

This day of events, which we?re calling Healthy Minds Across America, will provide an unprecedented opportunity for people in large cities and small -- from Boston to San Francisco, Montreal to Nashville and Ann Arbor to Houston -- to hear from leading mental health experts about the state of mental health research today.

The Healthy Minds Across America forums will take place at many of the universities and medical centers where NARSAD has supported cutting-edge research over the past 20 years. Leading mental health experts at these institutions will discuss the rapid progress of mental health research over the past few decades and take stock of what we know so far about the brain and its disorders, and what we still need to learn about the causes and progression of major mental illnesses. The experts will also discuss the growing array of treatment options and what the future may hold in new treatments and cures.

This day of transcontinental discussions will kick off a major new fundraising campaign ?also called Healthy Minds Across America ? for NARSAD, which will significantly expand the organization?s capacity to support research on mental illnesses. ?We plan to raise $200 million in the next five years to increase the funds available for critically needed research,? said Constance E. Lieber, NARSAD?s president emerita, who will chair the campaign.

?Despite current economic challenges, there is no better time to launch such a campaign,? commented Dr. Herbert Pardes, president of NARSAD?s Scientific Council, who is also president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian and a former director of the National Institute of Mental Health. ?Funding has remained flat for our federal research agency, the National Institutes of Health, and probably won?t get better any time soon. But we can?t wait for the federal government. Too many lives are at stake, and we must not lose momentum in the pace of discovery we?ve achieved over the past two decades.?

The Healthy Minds Across America forums will be held at the locations listed below. Please click the location links for details on starting time, location and speakers. Be sure to reserve your seat(s) by sending an e-mail to healthyminds@narsad.org or by calling us at 1-800-829-8289. And be sure to return to our website regularly for updated information on these events and our $200 million campaign to accelerate the progress of mental health research.
