Pyles, Lise. Hitchhiking Through Asperger Syndrome. Jessica Kingsley Publishers (October 2001)

This book is written by a mother of a son with Asperger Syndrome. She talks about the different aspects of helping an Asperger child develop and prosper. She demonstrates the significant role that parents can play in teaching skills that most children learn intuitively but Asperger children have to learn intellectually.

She discusses issues such as bullying, busing, diet, medication and the question of public education or homeschooling. She gives suggestions for dealing with auxiliary issues that relate specifically to Asperger children such as fine motor, large motor development, balance, motor integration, auditory concerns, balance, tactile, oral and smell sensitivities.

The author demonstrates the need for optimism, tenacity and perseverence in dealing with Asperger children. She demonstrates that it is possible to raise a child with Asperger Synrome and prepare him to cope with social issues while still maintaining his own unique personality and ideas.
