[How do I] How do I get my webcam live on the net?

I've got a older webcam and want to know the easiest way to get it live on the net. I cannot afford any software or paying for servers. I just like it so people I choose can log into and I can log into on my laptop. This has got something to do with my birdies

It appears something I thought would be easy is very complicated. There are sites that do it for you however you have to download software that opens up ports on your computer this I have been told can be a security risk. I tryed one but it just wouldnt work, got error messages I didnt understand so have uninstalled it. Then someone pointed me to something called the Windows Media Encoder which is on my computer part of windows,, so I followed all the instructions and it seemed to have set up a broadcast, got a URL and everything but when my friends log on to it, it times out or says web site cannot be foundmg: now I am being told that I need to reconfigure my router I have looked but dont have a clue, its all FTP, pnp and port range settings
