Hi, I came here for a second opinion. I was really depressed due to my poor academic performance. I was having problems paying attention in school. I would just doze off or get easily confused in class (especially mathematical subjects like economics or accounting). It would take me hours just to understand something other students would instantly grasp. So i went to my family doctor and she prescribed me concerta. It really calmed me down. Made me happy and provided a burst of energy. I was actually able to, process and understand information. Not only was I able to understand what I was reading, I was able to recall it. I was also able to finish chapters diligently, without skimming through the fine details. However, that doesn't mean I have adhd.
The thing is, you should only be taking concerta if you have adhd. Its a powerful stimulant with serious side effects. I don't think I should be taking this drug if I don't have adhd. I am having a hard time understanding this disorder. Just because someone is easily bored, forgetful or disorganized does not neccessarily mean they have adhd. In highschool, i was generally on top of my work. Never handed an assignment late. Graduated with an 88 average.
I then went to university, moved away from home, and things really started falling apart. Marks dropped drastically, never really studied even when I tried to. I would sit for 1-2 hours and would get easily frustrated to the point that I would just give up and put off the work. This has been my condition for the past 2 years.
Concerta however, really helped me study, but does that mean I should be taking it? I know other students that take it without a prescription and they have the same effects from the drug; increased concentration, calming effect, ability to read really boring, dry material. So, people will react to this drug similarly; regardless of whether or not they have adhd. Correct me if I am wrong here.
I asked my family doctor to refer me to a psychitrist so I could have a proper evaluation. (This will take atleast 2 months). The only problem is, even doctors don't know what causes adhd. They will ask you general questions like, are you easily distracted? (ofcourse, everyone is distracted from time to time!).
I do tend to day dream alot, but again, alot of normal people do. Sometimes i talk to myself If I am bored, quickly changing from one idea to another. Isn't that normal though?
Plz help me, I am debating whether or not I should go on this drug because it is really hard to come off of it once you start taking it regurarly.
I did try to analyze my history and there are some things that kind of scare me. I am very prone to acting on impulse and emotion, rather than reason. People also think that I am extremely lazy. But AGAIN, so are alot of other people. It's not that there is something wrong with you. It is perfectly normal behaviour. It doesn't mean you should be pumping yourself with psycho-stimulants.
