Listeria contamination has led to a recall of Le Belle de Jersey cheese sold in Quebec and Ontario.

Le Belle de Jersey cheese is being recalled because some batches of the product could be contaminated with the listeria bacteria. (Canadian Food Inspection Agency)

The affected cheese was sold in various weights at a number of retail locations between July 16 and Aug. 17.

It was manufactured by the Quebec company Les Bergeries du Fjord of Saguenay.

Food contaminated with listeria might not look or smell spoiled but could cause serious illness.

Symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.
People who are at highest risk are pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

If the product was repackaged at a deli counter, consumers are advised to contact the retailer to find out if they've purchased the affected product.

Consumers can return the cheese to the point of purchase or simply throw it out.

There have been no reports of illness as a result of the contamination.
