** Drug Digest Interaction Checker

LITHIUM may interact with IBUPROFEN, Anaprox and other Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories (ANSAIDS) such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, Relafen

Lithium is removed from the body by the kidneys. Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS may cause lithium to be reabsorbed into the body instead of it being removed as it normally would. If this happens, blood levels of lithium could be increased and this could cause serious side effects including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, irritability, difficulty concentrating, muscle weakness, drowsiness, and tremors.

When the NSAID is started or stopped while taking lithium, your doctor may want to monitor the lithium levels in your blood and adjust your lithium dose as needed.

If these drugs are used together, your doctor may want to monitor you closely for side effects and adjust the dose of lithium if needed.

Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems.

** Note: although this reference illustrates lithium and ibuprophen, by entering the name of any NSAID into the interaction checker will yield the same result.
