McDonald's Introduces Free Mocha Mondays
by Maria Starr

July 9, 2009

McDonald's is trying to put the McSqueeze on Starbuck's by offering its customers free mochas every Monday, starting next week.

I'm loving it! Starting Monday, July 13th McDonald's is launching a nationwide "Free Mocha Monday" campaign that will end with the last FREE mocha being given away on Monday, August 3rd.

"This is one of the largest sampling initiatives we've taken on as a company," McDonald's spokesman Neil Golden said, according to The Associated Press.

You're thinking…"Why would I want such a hot drink in the summertime?"

Why?? Because it's FREE!

But wait, you don't have to get it hot…you can opt for the FREE iced mocha instead!

So don't forget to get your free iced or hot mocha every Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at any participating McDonald's restaurant.

[The size of the free hot mocha is 8 oz., and the free iced mocha is 7 oz.]

Some reviews that favor Starbucks Mocha over the McDonalds Mocha:

The Caff? Mocha
The mocha is a sweet-tooth favorite in American espresso cuisine. Contemporary versions put a serving of espresso plus chocolate syrup into a caff?-latte quantity of hot milk, topped by a thin layer of froth and, at the customer's discretion, a modest mound of whipped cream. This was clearly the featured beverage at the McCaf? locations we visited, where banners and signs pictured it in creamy splendor, the whipped cream topping crisscrossed with a golden-arches grid of chocolate syrup dribbles.

The Starbucks Tall (12-ounce) Mocha
The drink: About ten ounces of milk flavored by one serving of espresso and a discreet shot of sweetened chocolate syrup, topped with whipped cream (whipping cream from a dairy supplier with vanilla and propellant but no other ingredients added).
The price (at our Northern California Starbucks): $2.95, tax included.
The quality: The milk was sweetly but subtly flavored with what seemed to be good quality chocolate syrup. The coffee flavor was difficult to clearly pick out behind the chocolate, milk and whipped cream residue; nevertheless it made its presence felt, giving the chocolate sweetness a pleasingly bittersweet, grown-up edge. Grade: B.

The McDonald's Small (12-ounce) Mocha

The drink: A caff? latte with a lot of added chocolate and sugar, topped with Reddi-wip Original (canned whipped cream with significant additional ingredients).
The price: $1.99, or $2.19 with tax.
The quality: Sugar and cheap-tasting chocolate syrup dominated both milk and coffee. Distinctly oily, chemical-tasting finish. Better when ordered without the Reddi-wip. Essentially came across as a not-very-good hot chocolate with bonus caffeine. Grade: D-.

The Mocha Challenge:
Edge to Starbucks big-time, although the Starbucks version costs 76 cents more than the McDonald's.

Coffee Review :: The World's Leading Coffee Buying Guide
The chocolate syrup in the McD mocha is more about sugar than about cocoa flavor and the McDonald’s mocha drink is, indeed, a lot sweeter than the Starbucks version. The whipped cream on the Mickey D comes from a ReddiWip can; Starbucks uses real whipping cream in a canister. Not only can you taste the difference right away, but after a couple minutes the real stuff is still there and the Reddi Wip is but a slimy memory.

Matters of Taste: Mocha Match: Starbucks 1 -- McJo 0
But a blind taste test involving 7 people preferred McDonalds 6 to 1:

My rating of the free iced mocha:

Two thumbs up :2thumbs:

Unlike what some reviews said, it didn't taste too sugary, or taste like chemicals, or taste bitter to me. It actually seemed like a perfect blend of flavors. I was left wanting more :D since the sample size is smaller than a small size.

Of course, I will have to try it next week as well to see if the quality is consistent :coffee:
