Patient's Guide to Choosing Antidepressants for Adults

Almost 40% of people will not respond to the first antidepressant they take; 25% who do not respond will respond after switching drugs, and more than 60% of people taking an antidepressant will experience at least one side effect.
Patients taking venlafaxine [Effexor] are more likely to discontinue therapy than those taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Response rates vary initially but are similar after 4 weeks of treatment with citalopram [Celexa], fluoxetine [Prozac], mirtazapine [Remeron], paroxetine [Paxil], and sertraline [Zoloft]. Mirtazapine [Remeron] has a faster onset of action; bupropion [Wellbutrin] can cause modest weight loss and carries less risk of sexual dysfunction; paroxetine [Paxil] and mirtazapine [Remeron] are most associated with weight gain; and sertraline [Zoloft] is associated with diarrhea.
