My boyfriend and I were both recently criticized by our supervisors for not being in our respective offices early enough in the morning, with no acknowledgement of the hours we each put in from home outside the standard work day. It was amazingly de-motivating to know that having our behinds in our chairs is valued more than having brains in our heads.

ROWE-based system creates other challenges for the individual -- like knowing when to turn off your laptop. Limits are important and we have been programmed to let others set them. You can work anytime can become you should be working all the time... Bloggers know this, I think.

Real people are working without vacations now. In that lovely show Day To Day that actually told it how it is (but was yanked for some reason), they did a story on how people are having to defer major surgeries, because they can't afford to take the time off from work...they don't want to be seen as a problem, and they are in fear of losing their job while convalescing. That's what real people are dealing with.
