Time to clean out your pantry?

That canned tuna won't last forever. But just how long can your store your pantry goods?

You can store low-acid commercially prepared canned foods, such as vegetables and meat, for two to five years. But high-acid foods, such as tomatoes and fruit juice, only last about 18 months.

Always check the expiration date on canned foods before using them.

And don't buy cans that are dented, leaking or show any signs of tampering. This may indicate a risk of food poisoning.

A couple of years ago my partner ate some tuna which was a week away from its use by date thinking it would be ok. It smelt ok and looked ok but he ended up in hospital with food poisoning so be careful. Also avoid the cheap shops that sell cans near their sell by date or ones which have rust on or have had stuff spilt on them.
