An Ontario produce company is warning Canadians not to consume some grape tomatoes because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

Mastronardi Produce of Kingsville, Ont., says people should not eat Field & Farm brand, grape tomatoes, 1 pint; and Compliments brand, Santalina Grape tomatoes, 280 grams.

The company took the action after they were notified by a Florida supplier about one lot of tomatoes that was later determined to be contaminated with salmonella anatum and recalled in the U.S.

The Farm & Field product was distributed in Ontario by Metro Ontario. The Compliments product was distributed by Sobeys in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Field & Farm brand Grape Tomatoes 1 pint clamshell package has a UPC code of 0 33383 65585 7 40398.

Compliments-brand Santalina Very Sweet Grape Tomatoes 280 gram clamshell package carries a UPC code of 0 68820 12262 3 40664 in Quebec and 40640 & 40664 in Atlantic Canada.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the products.

Salmonella anatum can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

The tomatoes were also distributed to California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

The tomatoes also were used in deli salads made by Tracy, Calif.-based Taylor Farms Pacific Inc., which also recalled products Monday.
