Should visitor messages be re-enabled?

  • No. They distract from regular forum posting and create a potential for abuse.

I have not yet used VM's on this particular forum but have done so intensively on other forums where they were possible.

I have found them to be an ideal way to exchange smalltalk between friends.

They are less 'labour intensive' than private messages and do not cause your messagebox to overflow.

Profiles are only visible for members and that gives them a sufficient measure of privacy for the purpose they serve. Plus the potential for abuse is much reduced by the ability to turn them off and the possibility to report abusive VM's. And unlike with PM's in such a case it will be much easier for the mods to review what happened.

Okay.

It's been 3 weeks and the voting is as follows:

Want Visitor Messaging = 45.83%

I have reenabled Visitor Messaging as a feature. If we have a problem with abuse, this may change again in the future. Please be reminded that Visitor Messages are NOT private: anything posted there can be read by other members visiting your profile. If you enable and use this feature, guard your personal privacy!

Note that if you prefer not to receive Visitor Messages or use this feature, you can disable it in your User CP Options.

I am glad to have Visitor Messaging back although I hope that the older ones will automatically delete so that the list does not go on and on. It is nice sometimes to send a quick message but I do not think it is necessary for them to stay visible for too long. :thankyou2: Mari
