Re: Would this med fo ADHD affect bipolar?

I don't think L-theanine can compete with something like Ritalin regarding efficacy.

But to answer your question: I'm sure L-theanine, at least at the dosage consumed by drinking green tea, is not going to affect most people with bipoloar disorder in a negative way.
And the dosage in tea can reach a theraputic level, assuming it could actually help:

L-theanine, a natural constituent in tea, and its ...[Asia Pac J Clin Nutr. 2008] - PubMed Result

(There are antectodal reports of people with ADHD benefiting from drinking green tea, which contains L-theanine. As a PubMed search indicates, preliminary research of L-theanine suggests it may be beneficial in restoring concentration.)

Personally, I would consider starting by drinking green tea -- decaf or not -- rather than take supplments of L-theanine since the green tea also contains antioxidents along with a safer dosage of L-theanine. However, I avoid hot tea since it stains the teeth much more than iced tea through a straw (which is how I drink my tea now).
