Best Buy Recalls Replacement Batteries Used in MacBook Pros
by Ron G., GeekSquad
July 3, 2013

Due to reports of batteries overheating while being recharged, Best Buy has issued a recall notice for approximately 5,100 replacement batteries installed in some MacBook Pro laptops at Geek Squad precincts between September 2008 and June 2013.

Rather than exposing Best Buy customers to potential burns or data-damage, the company decided to recall all batteries installed from the identified lots. While Best Buy wasn?t the only company who used and installed these replacement batteries, it is the first company to issue a recall. Customers with the recalled batteries will be given a replacement battery (or Best Buy gift card) in exchange for the potentially faulty battery.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of 13 battery fires, one of which led to an injury, as a result of the ATG replacement batteries overheating. The Commission announcement last Wednesday about the recall says consumers ?should immediately stop using the recalled battery, remove it from the computer and contact Best Buy.?

The lithium-ion batteries being recalled are both the black and white versions installed on MacBook Pro computers. The model number for the black battery is ?MC-MBOOK13B? and ?MC-BOOK13W? for the white one. Best Buy will be contacting customers directly to let them know about the recall, and ask how they would like to handle the exchange.

Customers who have one of the batteries can call Best Buy at (888) 737-6954 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central time daily, e-mail bestbuypartexchange@decisionone.com, or go to the company website at www.bestbuy.com and select the ?Product Recalls? link at the bottom of the page for more information.

Keep in mind that these replacement batteries were also available on the open market. If you replaced the battery on your MacBook Pro in the last couple of years, you might want to take a look at the battery?s model number to be sure you are safe charging it up and using your device.

Again, there is information on how to resolve this behind the ?Product Recalls? link at the bottom of the Best Buy website.
