Some background:
I recently purchased a DBT workbook to supplement the group therapy that I attend. I have started working through the book. The first couple chapters help to first identify what behaviors we want to change about ourselves, and then how to deal with stress. (One of the modules of DBT is "Distress Tolerance"). One method of dealing with stress is to soothe yourself using your five senses. For example:
  • Sight - look at a peaceful sunset or something that pleases you
  • Hearing - listen to a nature sounds cd or running water
  • Smell - use aromatherapy candles
  • Touch - rub or feel something soft or smooth; pet an animal
  • Taste - eat ice cream and really stop to enjoy the taste/texture
Now on to the victory!
I was in the middle of cleaning my bedroom, and my mind drifted to the fact that I quit my job, and the other rough times I had this summer. Then I remembered the words "Soothe yourself". I was actually making my bed at the time. So I grabbed the blanket and started rubbing it to feel the soft underside texture and the rougher taffeta topside. I was able to distract myself from distressing emotions, and actually was so distracted I was able to push away the tears.

I am proud of myself for applying the DBT skills to a real life situation.
