Just discovered a service from Google called Google Play

While some functionality is limited outside the U.S. such as the ability to purchase music tracks, other services appear to be available like Books, movies, android apps and devices (Nexus tablet).

However what appealed to me is the Google Play Music Service

The music service lets you upload your recorded music collection, up to 20,000 tracks, either using the playlists created by iTunes, Windows Media Player or selected tracks from My Music folder or the folder(s) of your choice.

I chose my playlists from iTunes that contain about 3500 tracks which is taking about three days to upload. Once uploaded, I can play my music from any computer or device by track, artist, genre, album or playlist as well as create new playlists on Google Music.

The operation requires the installation of Google Music Manager on your local computer for the upload, later download (as a backup) or managing your cloud collection.

If you are in the U.S. andpurchasemusic from Google, you can share that music with others using Google+.

If you use Google Chrome browser, there's a nice extension (shortcut) available for Google Music Manager at the Chrome Web Store.

Google Music To Launch Scan & Match
Oct 29, 2012
CNET

Google said in a blog post that it will launch scan-and-match in Europe on November 13 and the United States soon after.

Scan-and-match is the term used to describe a process whereby a user's music can be stored on the computer servers of a host service. The service can then stream songs over the Internet to the user's choice of Web-connected music players. The one deciding benefit of scan-and-match is that it saves the user from the time-consuming process of uploading each individual track to the host's servers.

Complete Story HERE

An upload of say, 5000 tracks can take the better part of a week, running 24 hours, so the scan and match feature will make the process a lot easier.

I believe iTunes uses this system, do they not?

Sort of... they have the Genius feature for both music and apps where they suggest new items based on your past choices.

My only experience with Genius is how it works internally, and not with online iTunes Store, where it analyzes the existing library on your IPod and creates it's own groupings based on it, s own analysis of your library.

The other aspect of Genius is while a track is playing, you can have Genius create a playlist of tracks similar to what, s playing.

That part of Genius is about 85% effective in it's analysis, but you can remove any out of context songs. I Like the Genius feature, and let it create a few of my playlists.

I didn't know it also suggests purchases based on preferences, but it's not surprising.
