This was very informative. Do you have any approximate stats of how many mental health patients (number or percent of total) receive ECT annually? I have understood it generally as an end of the road treatment after therapy and many medications have been tried, and deemed insufficient. The one thing this video did not address was the determining criteria for receiving ECT.
When I found out a family member was going to have this done, I automatically thought it was a bad idea. I assumed it would make her permanently disabled, probably because of all the negative things I have heard and have seen in movies and stuff.
But, it was an amazing thing actually. She went from really struggling with severe depression and crippling anxiety (and being repeatedly hospitalized and heavily medicated) to becoming a fully functioning person. It really made 100% difference in her life. I would personally never have it done, but for her, it was the right decision.
