Red-hot planet: All-time heat records have been set all over the world during the past week

From the normally mild summer climes of Ireland, Scotland and Canada to the scorching Middle East, numerous locations in the Northern Hemisphere have witnessed their hottest weather ever recorded over the past week.

Large areas of heat pressure or heat domes scattered around the hemisphere led to the sweltering temperatures.

No single record, in isolation, can be attributed to global warming. But collectively, these heat records are consistent with the kind of extremes we expect to see increase in a warming world.

Let’s take a tour around the world of the recent hot-weather milestones.

North America
A massive and intense heat dome has consumed the eastern two-thirds of the United States and southeast Canada since late last week. It’s not only been hot but also exceptionally humid. Here are some of the notable all-time records set:

Europe
Excessive heat torched the British Isles late last week. The stifling heat caused roads and roofs to buckle, the Weather Channel reported, and resulted in multiple record highs:

  • Scotland provisionally set its hottest temperature on record. The U.K. Met Office reported Motherwell, about 12 miles southeast of Glasgow, hit 91.8 degrees (33.2 Celsius) on June 28, passing the previous record of (32.9 Celsius) set in August 2003 at Greycrook. Additionally, Glasgow had its hottest day on record, hitting 89.4 degrees (31.9 Celsius).
  • In Ireland, on June 28, Shannon hit 89.6 degrees (32 Celsius), its record.
  • In Northern Ireland,
    • Belfast hit 85.1 degrees (29.5 Celsius) on June 28, its record.
    • Castlederg hit 86.2 degrees (30.1 Celsius) on June 29, its record
Eurasia
A large dome of high pressure, or heat dome, has persistently sat on top of Eurasia over the past week, resulting in some extraordinarily hot weather:

Middle East
As we reported, Quriyat, Oman, posted the world’s hottest low temperature ever recorded on June 28: 109 degrees (42.6 Celsius).

These various records add to a growing list of heat milestones set over the past 15 months that are part and parcel of a planet that is trending hotter as greenhouse gas concentrations increase because of human activity:

In late June 2017,
Ahvaz, Iran, soared to 128.7 degrees Fahrenheit
(53.7 Celsius) — that country’s all-time hottest temperature
.

That's insane considering many people there are poor meaning most likely no A/C

On that note, we are expecting a high of 34C on Saturday and I have to drive to Steinbach for my injection at 6PM which is usually peak temps. :panic:

I called and managed to get an appointment Friday morning at 8:00 am in Winnipeg to get my car A/C checked and filled. Had it done last summer and he put ultraviolet dye in it to see where it's leaking from. It held up last summer hopefully just a fill will hold it up another year. I'd do it myself but on the 2000 Ford Focus they have the low pressure fill point behind the wheel well under everything and it wound up cheaper than getting a kit to do it myself. I just had to do the fun part of getting the wheel well liner off and his hose connected since he had heart troubles and wasn't really supposed to be doing much and his helper was unavailable.

Was actually funny when I called him last year he said I can't do it, no helper. I said I'll help you. He said you have no idea where it is and I told him exactly where it was. He said Oh! Really? OK then, can you come over to my house now? Sure, I'll be there in 15 minutes. :)

The extreme heat here is taking all the strength out of me suppose to cool down Friday. Hope so sleeping most day do not have air con I am glad you can get your air con in your car fixed GaryQ i do have that in my vehicle thank goodness. Take care everyone.

Poor FMN, No A/C at home? I don't know how you can tolerate it.I feel really bad for you :(

Saw there were more than a dozen heat related deaths in Quebec alone. Sad

i have a blow up little pool i use to cool down in if that does not work i take a cold shower it helped the other day. and i stay inside only to go out to nrsg home or appointments. Keep cool by keeping cool facecloth on your head as well it does work to keep headache away some.

Yes, even with A/C it can only do so much and I don't want to push it and blow tyhe coimpressor or something. I'm taking lots of rests with Mindy and I have 3 fans going as well as the AC unit.

suppose to cool down Friday.

I'm doing a count down...

Saw there were more than a dozen heat related deaths in Quebec alone. Sad

Yes. Today the count was up to 16 dead. :(

Now 18.

Death toll from Quebec heat wave rises to 18

Heat wave drives elderly couple from sweltering nursing home | CBC News
July 5, 2018

The extreme heat at a Perth, Ont., nursing home has pushed an Ottawa woman to move her elderly parents to her own house until things cool down.

Harold and Helen Davies, both 94, had moved into Lanark Lodge just last winter, and their daughter Ruth Sirman said she was recently "stunned" to discover there was no air conditioning in their rooms.

Last Thursday, Sirman and her sister — whose mother-in-law also lives at Lanark Lodge — got thermometers to monitor the minimum and maximum temperatures. Three days later, when the temperature hit 31.5 C, Sirman drove to Perth to bring her parents — along with their medications, walkers, and two duffel bags filled with belongings — back to her home in Ottawa.

"They needed to get out of there because dad was getting sick," Sirman said. "The day I brought them home he was vomiting from heat stress."

Finally a storm has gone through here lighting and thunder and some rain still warm here though the rain is cooling things down.

Glad to hear it will cool down starting tomorrow in Ontario and Quebec.

Just saw that the current heat related death toll sits at 34 and possibly more in Quebec. Really sad news.

Hope my car A/C can get by with just a refill tomorrow morning and that the problem isn't bigger than a slow leak like last summer. It's going to be 34C here Saturday without taking the humidex factor into account and I have no choice but to drive out to get my injection. IF A/C works then I can let the car run and keep an eye on it from inside the building while it cools down enough to drive off. It will probably be like an oven in there around 5:30PM :panic:

I too hope you get that AC working in your car for sure no one should be out in this heat it is too easy to get heat stroke i should know just so scary. so sad now all those deaths in Quebec ugggg probably the very old and very young that has died so sad.

:fixed: Only cost me 50$. Left here at 7am got A/C charged and more dye put in. He was unable to find where it is leaking from. I know it's not a big leak because when his helper connected the hose to the low pressure fill point he forgot to first close the valve and I could hear it hissing out with decent pressure. Made a detour to my favorite Giant Tiger in Winnipeg and was back home at 9:40 :vroom:

That is good news glad everything went well and you got to go to Giant Tiger too. Weather is cool here today but is to climb again this weekend in the 30 blah.

It is so sad really it is maybe less places to get cool down in. Doesn't say also if they are older people that are left alone in their homes or if they are children nursing homes without like said air conditioner I am pretty healthy and i even got heat exhaustion does not take long for it to hit a person. Just very sad the numbers are still going up.
