We are pleased to announce the introduction of Cognitive-Behavioural Group Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder at the Centre for Psychological Services of the University of Ottawa. This 12-week program will deliver evidenced-based treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder in groups of 7 to 9 individuals who share the same diagnosis. The groups are facilitated by Dr. Cary Kogan and doctoral-level trainees under his supervision.

Although many people with social anxiety might find the idea of joining a group anxiety provoking, research and experience have demonstrated that learning to cope with one?s anxiety among people who share a similar experience can be beneficial. In particular, the group format allows people to observe that they are not the only one experiencing social anxiety. Furthermore, the group allows people to gradually face their anxiety in a supportive environment. Many people who complete the program indicate that although at the outset they were anxious about obtaining treatment in a group, they quickly became comfortable with the setting, ultimately benefiting from the group format.

The treatment involves several parts. These include:

  1. psychoeducation about anxiety and specifically, Social Anxiety Disorder,
  2. examination and challenging of individual participant?s socially anxious thoughts and beliefs,
  3. development of coping skills to deal with social anxiety, and
  4. individualized graduated exercises to help participants confront their fears.
If you are aware of an individual(s) who might benefit from this program, we would be pleased to schedule a telephone screening call and, if they are eligible, a comprehensive psychological assessment. The psychological assessment will assist us in determining whether or not group treatment would be appropriate. If a person is not eligible to join the group, we may offer individual treatment at our clinic or a referral to an appropriate professional/agency.

The usual cost of the group treatment is $50.00 for the psychological assessment (lasting from 1 to 3 hours) followed by $25.00 per session for a total of $300.00 for the 12-week program. Participants are expected to attend each session to obtain the most benefit from the program. Fees at the Centre for Psychological Services operate on a sliding scale and individuals with financial constraints are welcome to obtain services. Fees based on financial means will be set with our administrative assistant at the time of assessment. Individuals with insurance may be eligible for a portion of their fees to be reimbursed by their insurer.

Interested individuals can call the Centre for Psychological Services general reception at 613-562-5289 indicating their interest in obtaining group treatment or they can call Dr. Cary Kogan directly at 613-562-5800 ext. 4804.

The next group will begin in late September, with assessments being conducted in August. Sessions will be held weekly and last 2 ? hours.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Cary Kogan at 613-562-5800 ext. 4804 or our Director, Dr. Tim Aubry, at 613-562-5800 ext. 5289.
