The search for a family physician in Calgary could become an easier task starting next week (October 2010).
The province is launching a new website: www.needadoctorcalgaryandarea.ca.
Alberta's health minister is hoping the web-based program will help some of the estimated 250-thousand residents without a health provider.
Health minister Gene Zwozdesky believes the service will also reduce visits to emergency.
"Anywhere from 15 to 30 per cent of people coming into emergency for example are there because they do not have a family doctor to go to," he said.
Calgarians will be able to register with any of the seven primary care network offices which will then give direction to an available physician.
The registry is expected to reveal the depth of the doctor shortage problem, allowing for improved resource planning.
