A look back at the life and career of Peter, Paul and Mary's striking singer

Mary Travers, who died of complications from leukemia on September 16th at age 72, was best known as the visual focal point of folk icons Peter, Paul and Mary. With her fervent stage moves and long, straight blond hair, which she often shook to mesmerizing effect, Travers brought both powerful lungs and sex appeal to folk music.

Travers, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2004, received a bone marrow transplant in 2006. But her condition worsened, and by earlier this year, she had stopped performing. A resident of Redding, Connecticut, Travers died at Danbury Hospital and is survived her husband, Ethan Robbins, and daughters Alicia and Erika.

Rest in peace, Mary, and thank you for your beauty. She is leaving on a jet plane, flying first class no doubt.

I haven't been able to find a cite that says what type of leukemia she died from, but from her own website I found this:

In lieu of sending flowers or notes of condolence, Mary's family has suggested
a contribution to either of the following:
Be The Match Foundation
or
The Mary Travers Healthcare Fund at Danbury Hospital
(link coming- please check back)

I've offered "Be The Match" as a reputable source for information previously. Alas, bone marrow transplants cannot always cure, but they can offer years of good health, and it appears that she did enjoy many years, considering she lived to the age of 72.

Thank you, David. This is poignant in so many ways. Whether or not one is a fan of folk music, Peter, Paul and Mary made a huge impact on change through music. That's what music should be about: Making one think. Period.

Kinda choked up here.

Peter, Paul and Mary were great performers in their day and beyond as was demonstrated by their recent PBS performances.

Mary was a beautiful lady with a wonderful voice reflecting the times.

Along with all the recent losses of well known figures, she will be missed.
